O'Neil joined O'Neil took part in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 while he was still in highschool. The judges loved her voice and she was able to advance to the Top 100 round. The performance of O'Neil was highly appreciated by the judge. Despite this, O'Neil suffered a significant defeat during the Top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she received votes for the lowest 3 and the the bottom 2. The judges were astonished by the results and encouraged viewers to show support for singers with impressive singing skills such as Melissa. O'Neil's performances were so good that she never placed in the bottom three once ever again. O'Neil and her fellow contestants Rex Goudie and Werner delivered two spectacular performances in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that reports would claim that O'Neil was able to defeat Goudie and become the third Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and youngest winner in the Idol history. O'Neil received a rousing ovation from Canadian PM Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
